Main Street Celebrates Arrival Of E-Fairness In Texas
Level Playing Field Begins On July 1
June 29, 2012
Washington, D.C. – The Alliance for Main Street Fairness (AMSF) today issued the following statement concerning the approaching July 1 collection date in Texas whereby Amazon.com will be required to play by the same rules in the state as brick-and-mortar retailers:
“On July 1, Amazon.com will finally have to collect Texas’ sales taxes, just as employers in the state have been required to do for years. The end of special treatment for online retailers in the Lone Star state sends a strong message to Washington, D.C. that a true free market requires federal e-fairness legislation,” said Danny Diaz, spokesperson for the Alliance for Main Street Fairness (AMSF). “Congress should note the developments unfolding in Texas and follow suit by passing the Marketplace Equity Act, giving all retailers the chance to compete on a level playing field.”
Representatives Ted Poe (TX-02), Michael Conaway (TX-11), Pete Olson (TX-22), Kenny Marchant (TX-24) and Raymond “Gene” Green (TX-29) have signed on as co-sponsors of H.R. 3179, the Marketplace Equity Act.
